Lloyd, I love your material but if this is a series geared for beginners it seems risky to bait a submission to sweep.

  • Everything is risky when you’re first starting out. This is a core move that we learn early on, get tapped out, adjust, tweak, refine and once you got it, you got it!

  • This sweep works great! Mike shared this at a seminar in 2005, and it really great to see him teach it again!
    Thanks Lloyd!

  • I think this is an awesome move for beginners because one of the first submissions they’ll be defending is a paintbrush if they drill this move a lot they’ll sweep alot of competitors especially at the white belt level.

Best way to drill it live?? Bait your classmate into it. Do it 1000 times in class and when you get put in the situation in competition.. you’ll hit the sweep when it counts.

  • Perfect bro. You all have taken that sweep to another level. I remember the first day that I did it to Lloyd. He stopped in the middle of the roll and said, “do it again.” Then he said, “again.” Then he said, “again.” The he nodded his head and we slapped five and I’ve NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DO IT TO HIM AGAIN!! LOL! :-)

Risky but worth it. Seems effective. JT, congrats all the success (rodriguez from Lou’s)

  • Chris:

I like this move but if JT pulls his left leg up close to your body would you still be able to push it down and complete the sweep? I would hate to bait the sub and then reach for the leg to extend and find that I can’t and now he is locked onto my arm. Seeing as I am a white belt I may be missing something very obvious though. Thanks for the videos and other great advice. It is very helpful.

Master LLoyd I’ve purchased every product you’ve released and now you finally give me something up my alley!!! I’m grateful for a series geared towards the beginner!!! Thanks Master LLoyd for everything!!! I can see how this sweep would be effective and like anything I’ve learned in my limited knowledge of BJJ timing seems to be a great factor, Mike’s reaction time is critical it seems. So explosiveness is key!?

  • There are always counters to counters to counters. Make has used this at the blue, purple, brown and continues to use it at the black belt level now. Everything has a learning curve, but this technique is as solid as they come for those that put the time in to learn it.

  • Thanks Alvis, you for one know that this is the exact stuff that we do and teach! I hope your academy is doing well.

  • Dongo:

Professor Lloyd, they mentioned getting 2 points for the sweep, but if your arm is being attacked and you roll your opponent you don’t get sweep points… I might be wrong but I remember doing exactly that at the Panams 2009 and instead of getting the points, I got a sore elbow for almost 6 months, hehehe. One thing is for sure though, IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We always get our 2 points. sometimes they dont award the points until th guy releases the hold. You know how the rules always change on the spot. But for example, if I’m doing a 1/2 guard sweep, at the same time you put me in a kimura, but I sweep you and come on top. I will still get my 2 points, it didn’t matter that you were attacking, I acccomplished the sweep. Mike hit this in Japan and Brazil recently so I know they are still scoring it.
